A nice apartment with a TV on the wall that appears to be connected to the internet and has a hundred ads on the screen as a result.

So you're sitting in your living room staring at a massive box with your brand-new TV inside. You're excited, and you should be. Don't ruin that excitement by giving that TV your wifi username and password. Just don't. More and more TV manufacturers are going bonkers thinking of ways to advertise to you on the thing you already paid them money for. The internet is their lifeblood and if you deprive them of a connection to the outside world, they won't be able to annoy you as much.

I would suggest using some sort of box like an AppleTV to access your content and treat your "smart" TV as a dumb one. I'm not saying you won't ever get ads fed to you on those systems, but they're better for the time being.
